Swedish steelmaker SSAB has awarded an order to Georg Fischer through project partner NYAB, which is part of the planned electric steel mill project. The investment is part of SSAB's strategy to decarbonize steel production, which is of considerable importance to the construction industry: electric steel can reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 80 percent compared to conventional blast furnace production. For planners and building owners who rely on sustainability certifications according to DGNB or BNB, low-carbon structural steel could in future bring decisive advantages in the life cycle assessment of load-bearing structures. The specific order value and planned production start were not communicated.
