What lighting conditions do you need for an effective one-way mirror?

The decisive factor for Mirropane™ to function is the light ratio. To maintain privacy in the observation area, the illuminance between the public and private areas – or between the observed and observing sides – must be at least 8:1. The observed side must therefore be illuminated at least eight times brighter than the room from which you are observing.

In addition to this light ratio, Pilkington recommends further measures if absolute privacy is essential:

  • Use dark furniture and fixtures in the observation room.
  • Wear dark clothing in the area from which observation takes place.
  • Ensure that lights on the observed side are not directed directly at the glass surface.

These specifications are particularly relevant in environments where lighting conditions fluctuate or people can get close to the glass – such as in banks, supermarkets, or patient rooms.

How is Mirropane™ installed?

The glass coating must face toward the observed person. In this position, the glass acts like an ordinary mirror to the affected person, while from the other side it appears as a tinted pane and provides clear visibility.

Mirropane™ is normally only intended for interior applications. If you still want to use the product in outdoor applications, you should contact a local NSG Group representative beforehand to clarify suitability and possible adjustments.

The pyrolytic online coating offers better scratch resistance than subsequently applied offline coatings. The glass can be cut, processed as insulating glass, laminated, and thermally tempered – a significant advantage over more delicate mirror coatings that cannot withstand further processing steps.

Where is Mirropane™ used?

Pilkington positions the product for areas where discreet observation or covert surveillance is necessary. Main applications include:

  • Supermarkets: Monitoring sensitive areas such as cash registers or warehouses without visible camera presence.
  • Banks and cash processing facilities: Observation of teller windows and vault areas to protect staff and customers.
  • Data centers: Discreet monitoring of server and IT infrastructure rooms without structural intervention in sensitive areas.

The 6 mm version is available in annealed form. For applications with higher mechanical requirements – such as in public transport or safety-critical areas – the glass can be thermally tempered or processed into VSG — laminated safety glass.
