Schlagmann Poroton GmbH & Co. KG from Zeilarn has positioned itself in a ranking of leading German companies. The Bavarian family business is among the leading manufacturers of bricks and high-thermal-insulation masonry solutions in the German-speaking region.
The award comes at a time when the brick market is characterized by increasingly stringent energy requirements. Manufacturers such as Wienerberger and Erlus are competing for technical leadership in monolithic wall assemblies that meet both static and U-value requirements without additional insulation layers.
Schlagmann Poroton manufactures, among other things, modular bricks with integrated perlite insulation that achieve lambda values of up to 0.07 W/(m·K). Such systems enable single-leaf external walls with U-values below 0.20 W/(m²·K) – a requirement that is increasingly relevant in the context of GEG regulations and for KfW efficiency buildings.
The ranking criteria were not published in detail, but rankings of this type typically evaluate factors such as revenue growth, number of employees, innovation capacity, and regional value creation. For the brick and ceramic industry, the placement is a signal of stable market presence in a segment challenged by rising cost pressures in raw materials and energy as well as competition from mineral and ecological insulation materials.
Architects and planners use Poroton bricks mainly in single-family and multi-family residential construction, where monolithic construction methods are preferred for economic and building physics reasons. The combination of load-bearing capacity, sound insulation, and thermal insulation without multi-layer construction remains a unique feature of ceramic masonry.
Whether the award will have immediate effects on market shares or product development remains to be seen. However, it underscores the importance of medium-sized manufacturers in a market strongly shaped by regional structures and standardization requirements.
