CEMEX is developing graphene-modified concretes in collaboration with Argo Graphene Solutions, which promise a significant increase in compressive strength and durability. Graphene, a carbon material only one atom layer thick, is intended to optimize the microstructure of the cement matrix as an additive and thus improve mechanical properties. The technology, still in the research phase, could reduce cement requirements per cubic meter of concrete in the medium term and thus also improve the CO₂ balance of concrete structures.
